The No Mundane manifesto

Nothing
is ordinary.

The extraordinary is already present.
Our work is to create the conditions in which we can encounter it.

01

Begin with what is already here.

The mundane does not exist. There are only things we have stopped seeing. A groove holds music. A particle leaves a trace. An everyday place holds relationships we have yet to notice.

02

Change the scale. Change the encounter.

Some things escape us because they are too small, too vast, too fast, or too familiar. Enlarge a groove into a canyon. Bring astronomical distances into a landscape. Give attention a new point of entry.

03

Let the body do some of the knowing.

A distance becomes different when you walk it. A structure becomes different when you stand inside it. Direct experience can give an abstract fact a lasting place in memory.

04

Let the material carry the idea.

A line of light can trace a path. A surface can hold the shape of sound. A gap can give a pause its full weight. The material should help the phenomenon reveal itself.

05

Be faithful to the source.

Begin with observation, a recording, a measurement, or a clearly stated model. Preserve the relationships that give the work its meaning. Make clear where evidence ends and artistic interpretation begins.

06

Leave room for discovery.

An encounter should invite a first response before it asks for an explanation. Understanding can deepen as someone moves, looks again, listens, or returns with a new question.

07

Make room to wonder together.

A shared encounter can create a moment of common ground. People arrive with different histories and leave having noticed something together. Public space can hold that possibility.

08

Give each place a reason.

A courtyard, a path, a street, and a landscape each ask for something different. The work should grow from the character of the place and the lives already moving through it.

09

Build for a second look.

An image may catch the eye once. An enduring encounter keeps opening. A child, a scientist, a musician, and a returning neighbor should each find their own way into the work.

10

Return to the world differently.

The experience continues beyond the installation. A record, a patch of sky, a familiar walk: something once passed over now asks for attention. The extraordinary was here all along.

Look closer.
It is all wonderful.
